A Shout Out For Marshals!

Volunteer At The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend – Sign Up, Show Up & Have Fun!

Volunteering really does make all the difference. Join our team of volunteer marshals to help make The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend 2024 happen!

Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend organisers are looking for volunteer support to assist with marshalling of the race routes. Volunteers will get a front-row view at one of the most exciting sporting events to happen in Mid Sussex this year. The Mid Sussex Marathon takes place over three days, from Saturday 4th May to Monday 6th May, and in its 13th successive year is a popular community sporting event.

A volunteer marshal’s role is varied and can include directing runners along routes, monitoring crowd movement and activity, being aware of the location of car parks, first aid points and lost children points. Responding to directions from the police, emergency services, or Marshal supervisors, marshalling car parks, manning water stations and of course, cheering on and encouraging the runners – a very important part of volunteering!

Who can help? Everyone is welcome. From students looking for volunteering opportunities (great to include on a cv), those looking for event work experience or those who simply enjoy giving up some of their time for a community sports event. All volunteers will be given a full briefing, a volunteer t-shirt and refreshments.

Those who can help on any day between 8.45am-1.30pm will find more information about volunteering, and a registration form on the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend website. Simply sign up, show up, and have fun!

Simon Adby, Managing Director of AHS Wellbeing said,

“We always need volunteers for this fantastic community event. No previous experience is required, all it takes is a positive attitude, the desire to help others and enthusiasm. It would be great to see both old and new faces at this year’s event.”

Bovis Homes is proud to support the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend

As a local housebuilder, which is delivering much needed new homes in the area, Bovis Homes is proud to support the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend.

We are building 200 new homes and creating a 23-acre country park at our Walstead Park location in Lindfield.

We therefore feel very much part of the local community and are delighted to be sponsoring the final day of the challenge, which takes place in Burgess Hill, just a few miles from Walstead Park.

Walstead Park will feature a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments and two to five bedroom houses. There will be 140 properties for private sale and 60 affordable homes for local people through low-cost or shared ownership. The first residents moved into their new homes at the end of last year.

Located off Scamps Hill, the development will also include footpaths, woodland and wildlife areas, a wetland walk and children’s play areas.

Bovis Homes is part of the Vistry Group, which also includes Linden Homes and Countryside Homes.

Want to know more about this years bespoke medal design?

We are delighted to hear so many of you love the MSMW 2020 medals. We’d like to say a massive thank you to White Rabbit Events for the fabulous design.

Read on to find out more about White Rabbit Events, the artist, Kat, and how she went about designing these incredible medals!

About white rabbit events by Medal designer Kat

One of the services offered by White Rabbit Events is bespoke, in-house medal and logo design. I (Kat) am an artist who creates from the heart, to capture imagination and inspire those who I reach – from organisers to recipients.

From start to finish my design process focuses on bringing the core of the event or brand to life. I spend time researching and discussing the background and history of an event with the client, really getting to understand their journey, passion and goals. Above all, I want the finished design to make my clients and their awesome recipients to feel inspired, proud and a part of something special.

How kat created the design for msmw 2020 medals

The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend 2020 medal vision was to create a design which was unique, commemorative and captured the spirit of the event. MSMW is one of a kind, with 3 different races, over 3 days in 3 Mid Sussex towns (under normal circumstances!). This event really brings these communities together, working with local leisure centres and businesses, responsibly showcasing the scenic environment each town has to offer, supporting charities along with providing races for all of the family and a supportive volunteer team!

To capture the importance of the environment and community, I chose historical landmarks / places of interest from each town and together with MSMW organisers and the respective Councils, we agreed that these places reflected the community spirit in each town. They each play an important role and are places that each area is proud of. This fits the ethos of MSMW perfectly.

I then set about creating the design so that the elements would look detailed and striking, both individually and when they are overlaid as the Marathon or Half Marathon Finishers set. Myself and the MSMW team are very proud of the results and we’re really enjoying seeing the worthy recipients showing them off!

Kat is now busy planning something else very exciting for MSMW 2020 runners, so watch this space for further details!

If you haven’t signed up and want to grab one or all of these bespoke medals, you still can! You have until the 28th June to sign up and until the 1st July to complete your distance!

Here’s a shout out for Hurst College House Fundraising events.

We’ve heard from MSMW 2020 sponsors, Hurstpierpoint College, who have been doing some amazing fundraising throughout lockdown. Read on to find out more!

Senior school students from across the year groups have been following the school mantra Work hard, do good and engage whilst having fun by taking part in house fundraising events from home during the lockdown learning period.

Fundraising for Brighton and Sussex Hospitals.

The girls from Martlet House produced a Lockdown Cookbook, compiled from recipes they enjoyed making, to raise funds for the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Charitable Funds. They smashed their target of £500 three times over by raising more than £1500 and each person who donated was sent an electronic copy of the cookbook. A representative from the charity said: “Thanks to everyone who was involved with the Lockdown Cookbook. It is wonderful to have the support of people like you particularly at this time with staff on the front line working so hard to keep us safe. This great idea has raised a tasty sum!”

Quiz night for the NHS.

Star Housemaster Owain Jones organised a quiz night for the boys and their families which raised more than £640 for NHS Charities Together.

Do good challenge.

There was also a ‘do good’ challenge, when the boys were asked to do something kind for other people and the winner delivered food packages on his quad bike to the vulnerable people in his community.

Ultra marathon for NSPCC.

The girls of Pelican House are in the final week of their virtual fundraising challenge of walking, running, cycling, riding or swimming from the old Pelican House to John O’Groats and returning to the new Pelican House. This 2344km (1456 miles) ultra marathon is in aid of the NSPCC (partners of the Mid-Sussex Marathon) and Rise – so far £600 has been raised for the NSPCC and £1630 for Rise. Eight girls across the year groups have also been making face masks for patients of the Agora Fertility Clinic in Brighton. Head Guardian Jessie explained: “Pelican decided to fundraise for these charities because both protect those who suffer from domestic abuse, which is a particularly important issue during lockdown. National statistics have shown a huge increase in violence with 49% more calls to the national domestic abuse helpline. The NSPCC was chosen as a nationwide organisation focusing on children in abusive and violent homes; and Rise as a local Brighton-based charity, which focuses on helping all those affected by domestic abuse in Sussex.”

1000KM for Save the Children.

Wolf girls also opted for a charity walk, run, swim, cycle or ride but they chose the more traditional route from John O’Groats to Lands End, covering 1000km in three days. Fifty students and staff covered 20km each and their target of raising £1000 for Save the Children, which equalled £1 for every kilometre covered, was well and truly beaten, totalling almost £1200 to date.

1000 Miles for Burgess Hill Food Bank.

Not to be outdone, the staff body launched the Hurst Staff Charity Challenge and set themselves an original target of travelling 1000 miles by running, walking, cycling, rowing or swimming to raise £1000 for the Burgess Hill Community Food Bank, which supports local families in need. As the number of miles ramped up swiftly, the target was reassessed and raised to 2000 miles and then again to 4000 miles. More than 60 staff have contributed miles so far.

We think you are all incredible and deserve to be very proud of your achievements, congratulations from the MSMW 2020 team!
