The Importance Of Sport, Outdoor Education, Creative & Performing Arts

Advocates of co-curricular activities, Hurst College explains why they play a big part in the lives of their students.

“What particularly strikes visitors to Hurst College is the vibrant dynamic community and the importance placed on an all-round as well as a core academic education. Students are enabled and challenged to make the most of their talents and the huge opportunities which are available. The college is ambitious for its students to achieve the best that they can in all that they do, recognising and encouraging both engagement and achievement. Whilst the best possible academic grades are critical, Hurst believes the development of the key skills, qualities and values which are so important in life come more from engagement with life beyond the classroom.

Hurst regard co-curricular activities – such as sport, outdoor education, creative and performing arts – as being key to the all-round education of each student. The college offers a wide range of activities for all students during the school day. The programme is designed to encourage them to try new skills, move beyond their comfort zones, and gain experience in a safe and supportive environment.

It is the intention that through these activities, students will not only acquire certain skills and develop certain qualities, but will also be introduced to a sport, hobby or pastime which will give them pleasure throughout their lives.

Whether such activities are more physical or challenging in nature, service-oriented or cerebral, students are encouraged to pursue at least one significant activity throughout their time at Hurst. Co-curricular activities include the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Combined Cadet Force (CCF), community service, environmental conservation and the Hurst farm. Other activities include clubs for books, film, mechanics, dissection, ICT, creative arts, golf and sport. During the week, a host of additional activities are scheduled including fitness training, swimming and other sports, alongside sessions for drama, choir, orchestra, dance, the Top House competition, debating and workshops for art and DT students.

Above all else at Hurst, nobody is ‘beneath the radar’ or ‘on the bench’. Each child is an active member of the community, who is encouraged, supported and enabled to realise their potential.”

Lindfield Village Run 2020 Sunday 17th May 2020

The Lindfield Village Run 2020 offers you an opportunity to warm up with a 10K or 5K a week prior to running in The MSMW 2020.

Race Start Times: 10K starts at 10.30am. 5K starts at 10:45am.

The Lindfield Village Run is now a well-established event which sets out two cross county runs: a 10k Village Run and a 5k Family Fun Run. Both take place mostly on paths and tracks through the West Sussex countryside in the immediate vicinity of the village of Lindfield. It has often been described as an old-fashioned cross-country run with plenty of multi-terrain, some slippery surfaces and the odd cow in fields!

The Run starts and finishes at HICKMANS LANE RECREATION GROUND in Lindfield where this local fundraising event, takes on the feel of a professional run on Sunday 17th May 2020. The volunteer community organisers from the King Edward Hall committee arrange everything the runners need to have an enjoyable yet competitive morning run-out in the countryside.

This years’ event is no exception to the excellent standards set by the team. Runners can enjoy:

· Easy online booking for both 5K and 10K events – NOW OPEN!

· Professional timing chips giving each runner an accurate start and finish time

· Fully marshalled and sign-posted routes for both 10K and 5K routes

· Colour coded race numbers for the 5K/10K runners so supporters can easily identify them and cheer on encouragement

· Secure bag storage tented village for all competitors

· Refreshments available for all from Slake coffee shop

· Warm up facilities provided by Potential Personal Training

· Physio facilities on hand from Six Physio team

· Medals for every participant, no matter what their time

Why we’re supporting the NSPCC #3

“We work locally in every community to protect children from abuse and neglect.  Through our ‘Speak out, Stay safe’ programme, we are visiting all primary schools across Sussex, delivering assemblies and workshops to help children understand the signs of abuse and where to go for help.  This year in Sussex, we hope to visit 168 schools and speak to 31,920 children.  For more information visit www.nspcc.org.uk/speak-out-stay-safe.” Kate Hershkowitz, NSPCC Community Fundraising Manager for Sussex

Who are Hurst?

Interested in finding out more about our sponsors Hurst College?

Hurst College is a thriving independent school located within a 140-acre campus in West Sussex and offers a through-school education from Pre-Prep to Sixth Form.

With a vibrant, dynamic community, the college provides exceptional facilities for learning, placing huge importance on providing an excellent all-round education, with a strong academic core for every child. Academic excellence is the foundation of a Hurst education, but Hurst also offers extensive sporting, cultural, intellectual and social programmes, to help pupils develop key skills, qualities and values for life.

Academically selective, but not aggressively so, the school has an excellent track record, with improved year-on-year examination results, and the vast majority of pupils go on to Russell Group universities including Oxford and Cambridge.

The college achieved its strongest ever set of results at GCSE and A-level last Summer and was at the top of the rankings for GCSE and A-level value-added scores amongst UK independent schools – a key metric for parents who want their child “to do their best”. Hurst’s philosophy is to celebrate individual performance in all aspects of life, judging each student’s success against their own potential. The college was awarded excellent grades in all categories at its most recent ISI full inspection.

Hurst offers both day and boarding options (from Year 9) to enable families to choose which option suits them and their children best. The college’s balanced 21st century boarding approach means there is a choice of flexi (three nights) and weekly (five nights), both of which provide a healthy work-home balance, as pupils make the most of the educational and co-curricular opportunities during the week, leaving weekends free for quality family time.

In short, Hurst College aims to develop confident, successful, independent individuals with a good sense of themselves and the world around them, who will succeed in their lives whatever route they choose to take.
