This Year’s Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend Goes Virtual!

Join us for the MSMW 2020 Virtual Race!

This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend has been postponed. BUT we wanted to find a way to stage the event so that you can still receive the fabulous medals!

A new MSMW Virtual Race has now been launched.

Historically this event is held over the May Bank Holiday weekend with three races in three towns which, combined, adds up to the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles. You can enter each race individually or, why not enter all three and take on the Marathon Challenge? Each finishers medal has the name of one of the three Mid Sussex towns and those completing the whole 26.2 miles get a 4th medal to complete the set!

So instead of having to run the marathon over a three-day weekend and working out how to travel between East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill, we’ve made it a whole lot easier!

Choose Your Challenge:

The Ultimate Challenge

  • The Marathon 26.2 Miles (3 runs of 2 x 10 mile & 1 x 10k)
  • The Half-Marathon 13.1 Miles (3 runs of 2 x 5 mile & 1 x 5k)
  • Complete the challenge and win all four medals!
  • Or why not challenge yourself and complete both?

Individual Races

  • East Grinstead 5 mile or 10 Mile
  • Haywards Heath 5 mile or 10 Mile
  • Burgess Hill 5K or 10K
  • One medal for each of the individual race distances with the name of the town

For Families

  • 1 KM Family Fun Run
  • Junior 1 Mile Run
  • Or try an individual race over a longer distance
  • Maybe even the ultimate Challenge of a marathon!

How to complete a Virtual Event:

Participating in a virtual event means you can complete the distance at any time within the event time frame in a location of your choice. Once you have booked your place, we will send you an email with a step by step guide, it couldn’t be easier!

Rather than completing your chosen distance over a three-day weekend, you will now have 40 days to complete whichever Challenge you choose to take up. Race Dates – 23rd May to 1st July. The last date to book your place is the 28th June

Once entered into your chosen event, complete the challenge in your choice of location and then send us recorded evidence of the distance and time completed. Please note, for marathon and half marathon entries, to appear on the leader board, you will be sending us proofs of your THREE individual runs.

If you enter a single event your result will be recorded alongside others who are also taking part in that race and we will send you your own individual medal. If you have been missing the racing environment, then this is an opportunity to test yourself and engage with fellow competitors.

Or you can take a more novel approach and complete the distance of your choice in your own unique style! Walk, run, on a bike or in a wheelchair! You’ll still receive a medal for completing. You may even decide to raise money for our chosen charity the NSPCC, or another cause that is close to your heart. We don’t mind how you do it, in fact the more creative the better! Walk a Marathon in 40 days, complete 422 x 100 metre Sprints, hop for a Mile, or Cycle a Marathon in two hours, we’d love to see how you do it, do post your selfies and remember to use the tag #MSMW2020!

Stay Safe

ALL WE ASK IS THAT YOU COMPLETE YOUR CHALLENGE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GOVERNMENT’S LATEST SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES.

The Race is ON! Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend Goes Virtual!

The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend 2020, scheduled to be staged on 23rd-25th May 2020, was postponed on 24th March following the advice of England Athletics that due to the Covid-19 pandemic all licensed events could not take place until 1st June 2020 at the earliest.

This is the ninth year of the weekend and it is very important to us that we find a way of staging the event this year. In light of the uncertainty surrounding when races will resume and in finding a suitable weekend to stage the 3-day format of the race, we have decided that the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend 2020 will be cancelled, and a new MSMW2020 Virtual Race held in its place.

The MSMW2020 Virtual Race will provide an opportunity for everyone to participate in all of our unique events. The event will be open from 23rd May to 1st July, with entries closing on 28th June. We are giving you 40 days to complete whichever challenge you choose to take up. Once entered into your chosen event, complete the challenge and then send us recorded evidence of the distance and time completed. You will be entered onto the leader board and sent your beautiful, bespoke, commemorative medal in the post.

If you have been missing the racing environment, then this is an opportunity to test yourself and engage with fellow competitors. The ultimate challenge is the 3-day Marathon but if you’re new to running since we have been in lockdown then perhaps completing the Burgess Hill 5k will be just reward for all your recent hard work.

We want to see all your photos and videos as you complete your chosen Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend Virtual challenge. Perhaps you will choose to raise funds for a charity, maybe even don some fancy dress?! All we ask is that you complete your challenge in accordance with the Government’s latest social distancing guidelines.

Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding during this very difficult time. We have received many kind words and comments of support, which has reassured us that we have taken the right approach.

If you’ve already entered MSMW 2020 or want to know more entering, please download our FAQ’s

Entry Details

Complete them individually – or take on all three to cover 13.1 or 26.2 miles and receive a specially designed Commemorative Mid Sussex Marathon or Half Marathon Weekend Medal.

Entries close at midnight on the 28th June.

How to submit results:

The challenge is a virtual event, which means you can participate and complete the challenge from anywhere in the world, including your living room! All you need to do is choose your distance during the 40 days of the challenge, record your activity with a GPS watch or activity tracking app and email us at info@nice-work.org.uk. All the results will be collated into a leader board to show overall and age category winners.

Medals:

Participants that complete the 10, 5 mile and 10k & 5k races will get a high-quality bespoke Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend medal, each one featuring the respective town – East Grinstead, Haywards Heath or Burgess Hill. Those completing the three-race Marathon and Half Marathon will get a 4th medal to create a beautiful stacked memento of completing your challenge. This year’s medal design is a must for your collections!

Medals will be posted within 7 days of submission.

Keep Active with our Weekly Top Tips!

Now the Virtual MSMW 2020 Race is over, We want to help you keep race ready, so here is the first in our series of useful tips.

We all know the health benefits of physical activity and it’s as important as ever during social distancing. Here’s how you can stay active, remain physically fit and maintain positive mental health:

1.KEEP UP A ROUTINE

Most of us have less structure to our daily routines, especially if working from home. Keep a regular routine with your workouts to frame your day and ensure that you do not skip out on exercise.

2.CREATE PERSONAL GOALS AND TARGETS

This is a great way to stay motivated and keep on track to achieve what you desire.

Stretch

3.SPEND A FEW MINUTES STRETCHING IN THE MORNING

Whether you have five minutes or twenty, spending a few minutes first thing in the morning stretching out and mobilising the joints and muscles can be very beneficial for both the mind and body.

4.GET OUTSIDE EVERY DAY

Throughout the lockdown period, The Government have recognised the importance of outdoor activity. As restrictions ease, there is more opportunity to exercise outdoors, so continue to make time each day for some outdoor activity.

Of course running it is one of the most efficient ways to workout. If you’re not a runner, walking can provide similar health benefits.

5.HAVE A VIRTUAL WORKOUT DATE OR FIND A VIRTUAL WORKOUT BUDDY

Find a friend to participate in a virtual workout program with you. This will keep you motivated and is a great way to stay social while maintaining social distancing.

Online workout, home workout

6.TAKE PART IN ONLINE FITNESS PROGRAMS

There are many home fitness apps and websites available that allow for all different types of workouts from home strength training to yoga and maybe even high intensity interval training!

7.EXERCISE WITH PETS

Running with dog

This is a great way to keep exercise fun whilst spending quality time with your pet.

It has often been described as an old-fashioned cross-country run with plenty of multi-terrain, some slippery surfaces and the odd cow in fields!

The Run starts and finishes at HICKMANS LANE RECREATION GROUND in Lindfield where this local fundraising event, takes on the feel of a professional run on Sunday 17th May 2020. The volunteer community organisers from the King Edward Hall committee arrange everything the runners need to have an enjoyable yet competitive morning run-out in the countryside.
